2019: Endemic Fantasy

The following works present compositions inspired by Hiligaynon words that are unique to the artist’s native language. All three feature annotations, images, speech category, and the words themselves to help create a better and fuller picture of what each word means. Meaning is drawn not from mere definitions but from memories, experiences, and context.

As entries to a show that desires to highlight local culture, the pieces and the artist herself focus on language—a mode so powerful that it’s used not only to preserve and transmit culture but also to assimilate and assail those of others.

At the heart of each piece is a desire to share one’s local culture and to be respected and understood, all the while asserting that one’s culture and identity of being “galing probinsya” is equal and not second to the seemingly dominant “imperial Manila”.

These works were exhibited in Pinto Museum in 2019.
